Depressants drugs that reduce neural activity & slow body's functions
Alcohol low doses - relaxes drinking by sowind sympathetic nervous system high doses - reactions slow, speech slurs, & skilled performance deteriorates
Barbiturates drugs that mimic the effects of alcohol depress CNA activity & in larger doses
Opiates depress neural activity, temporarily lessening pain & anxiety
Methadone treatment used to combat heroin addiction
Stimulants Drugs that excite neural activity & speed-up body functions
Caffeine increases heart & breathing rate to provide energy increases attentiveness & improves mood
Nicotine leads to burst of receptor activity acetylcholine (calls body to action) release
Cocaine produces intense euphoria and mental alertness brain is produced w/ dopamine-produced pleasure sensations
Ecstasy (MDMA) stimulant & mild hallucinogen makes one feel calm "club drug" long-term serotonin changes
Amphetamines suppress appetite & increase concentration + reduce fatigue
Methamphetamines (crystal meth) reduces baseline dopamine levels = permanently depressed functions
Hallucinogens distort perceptions & evoke sensory images
LSD (ACID) very powerful and lasts long visual distortion + intense emotions
Marijuana relaxation & increases sensitivity to sights
THC produces "high" & remains in body long after use impairs coordination & slow reaction time
