TermDefinition
boycott a form of protest that involves refusing to purchase goods or services.
duty a tax on imports.
grievance an objection or reason to complain.
militia military force made up of local citizens to help protect their town, land or nation.
repeal to cancel or nullify especially a law.
revenue income money that is received.
Sons of Liberty the groups of merchants, shopkeepers and craftsmen who successfully opposed the Stamp Act by establishing networks to boycott British goods.
tryanny unjust rule by an absolute ruler.
Committee of Corresspondence in the Revolutionary era, a group of colonists whose duty it was to spread news about protests against the British.
Writ of Assistance a legal document giving authorities the right to enter and search a home or business.
drumlin a smooth-sloped hill made of glacial sediments.
unalienable right a right that cannot be taken away.
hessian German soldiers hired by the British to fight during the American Revolution.
earth-work human made land modifications.
artillery large guns that can fire over a long distance.
loyalist an American colonist who supported Britian during the American Revolution.
minute-man an American colonial militia member who was ready to join in combat at a moments noice.
continental army the American army forms in 1775 by the secondary continental congress and led by the General George Washington.
Secondary Continental Congress a group of leaders of the American colonies who met to address the problem of Britian tyranny, declared independence in 1776, and led the United States through the American Revolution.
patriot an American colonist who supported the right of the American colonists to govern themselves.
First Continental Congress The 1774 meeting of representatives from all American colonies to decide on a response to the Intolerable Acts.
