| mechanism of death | the biological process that causes death ( blood loss, cardiac arrest) |
| manner of death | the category of how death occurred: natural, accidental, suicidal, homicidal |
| cell | the smallest unit of life that preforms all basic functions |
| tissue | a group of similar cells that work together to preform a specific job |
| organ | a structure made of different tissues that work together for a common function (heart, lungs) |
| organ system | a group of organs that work together to preform major body functions (digestive system) |
| organism | a complete living thing such as human, plant, or animal |
| digestive system | made of mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and liver, breaks down food into nutrients for energy and growth |
| nervous system | made of brain, spinal cord, and nerves. sends and receives signals to control the body's actions |
| skeletal system | bones, joints, and ligaments. supports the body, protects organs, and helps with movement |
| integumentary system | made of skin, hair, and nails. protects the body, regulates temperature, and prevents dehydration |
| immune and lymphatic systems | made of lymph nodes, spleen, and white blood cells. fights infections and removes toxins |
| urinary system | made of kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. filters waste from blood and removes it as urine. |
| cardiovascular system | made of heart, blood, and blood vessels. pumps blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. |
| reproductive system | made of testes, penis, ovaries, and uterus. produces sex cells and enables reproduction |
| endocrine system | made of pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal glands. produces hormones that regulate growth, metabolism, and mood |

| legal time of death | the official time recorded on legal documents (pronounced by a doctor or authority) |
| algor mortis | the cooling of the body after death |
| rigor mortis | the stiffening of muscles after death due to chemical changes |
| livor mortis | the pooling of blood in parts of the body closest to the ground, causing purple spots |
| decomposition | the breakdown of body tissues by bacteria and natural processes |
| insect activity | the presence of bugs(like flies)that help scientists estimate how long a body has been dead |
