| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Qualitative Research | Qual research is a form of social inquiry that focuses on the way people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live . . to understand the social reality of individuals, groups or cultures. (Savin-Baden, 2013, p. 11). |
| Grounded Theory | GT is a "research strategy whose purpose is to generate a theory from data" (Punch, 1998 as cited in Kahn, 2014, p. 227). This is an inductive process. |
| Theoretical Sampling | "The process of data collection for GT whereby the researcher jointly collects, codes, and analyzes [data] and decides what data to collect next/where to find it ...to develop [the] theory as it emerges" (Glaser & Strauss, 1967, p. 45). |
| Inductive Qualitative Inquiry | A research method that moves from specific data/observations to a broader theory/generalization (Charmaz, 2012). Some think of it as a "bottom up" approach. |
| Methodology | The overall strategy or approach that connects philosophical assumptions to specific methods of data collection and analysis. |
| Thick Description | Refers to a rich, detailed, and contextualized account of social experiences, behaviors, or settings. Rich, sensory detail; it can go beyond detail to also include interpreting the meaning behind them within a cultural or situational context. |
| Reflexivity | "A process that helps researchers consider their position and influence during the study, and it also helps them to know how they have constructed and even imposed meanings on the research process" (Savin-Baden, 2013, p. 76). |
| Reflection | "the turning back or illumination of something," (Savin-Baden, p. 75); the act of looking back on one’s experiences, decisions, and actions during the research process. |
| Social Constructionism | Individuals, groups, and cultures create social meaning, and their own shared realities, through language and interacting with each other. |
| Epistemology | The study of knowledge; in qualitative research, this includes the researcher’s assumptions about what counts as knowledge and how knowledge is constructed or understood. |
| Phenomenon | is literally what the study is about; it is the "thing" being investigated. |
