| Imagery | a form of figurative language that involves using words that appeal to the five senses |
| Irony | a technique that points out inconsistency between what is seen or heard and what is known to be true |
| Metaphor | makes a direct comparison without using like or as |
| Metonymy | a type of implicit metaphor that uses another name to refer to something |
| Repetition | uses a recurring word or phrase to make an idea memorable |
| Rhetorical question | is a question asked for effect rather than with expectation of a reply |
| Simile | a comparison of two dissimilar things using like or as |
| Formal writing | used whenever authors want to convey their ideas to a wide audience |
| Informal writing | takes on the characteristics of a spoken conversation |
