| micturation | the act of urinating |
| anuria | no urine |
| oliguria | low urine output |
| polyuria | excessive urine output |
| dysuria | painful urination |
| hematuria | blood in urine |
| nocturia | frequent urination at night |
| enuresis | involuntary loss of urine during sleep |
| urine retention | the inability to completely empty the bladder |
| stress incontinence | leakage caused by pressure on the bladder, such as from coughing or sneezing. |
| urge incontinence | a sudden urge to urinate followed by an involuntary leakage. |
| defecation | the act of excreting feces from the rectum through the anus |
| peristalsis | the wavelike muscular contractions that move food and waste through the intestines |
| flatus | gas or air that is passed through the anus |
| melena | tarry, black stools that can indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract |
| hematochezia | bright red blood in the stool, which can indicate lower GI bleeding |
| ostomy | a surgically created opening in the abdomen for the elimination of waste. |
| colostomy | an ostomy connected to the colon |
| ileostomy | an ostomy connected to the ileum (small intestine) |
