Important terms to know for class
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Congruency | The topic, problem, purpose, research question all go together with the method, data, and how data is analyzed. |
| Pragmatic | Focuses on evaluating how an intervention or approach works in real-world, routine practices/conditions rather then under controlled, conditions. |
| Phenomenon | The "who" or "what" of your research. The essence or "thing" being studied |
| Analytical strategy | How you'll use your data; needs to be based on the data you plan to collect. There should be congruency between this and your phenomenon |
| 6 ways to phenomenon can be studied | Individual, groups, concepts, processes, structures, artifacts. This dictates the whole study. |
| What is the difference between subject, topic, and purpose? | Subject is the general field of study. The purpose is the more specific matter of interest. The purpose is what the intent of the study is. |
| Research Problem vs Research Purpose | The problem is the why you want to know and the purpose is how you plan to find out-a synopsis of the study. |
| Individuals in Phenomenon | Research is on an individual's perspectives, attitudes, and experiences. Data focuses on exactly what each person said. |
| Groups in Phenomenon | Research is on a group or subgroup to find the patterns of knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors. Data focuses on saying something about the group as a whole. |
| Processes in Phenomenon | Research is on processes and actions. Data focuses on better understanding the process itself. |
| Bias | What a research brings to the study. Researchers need to provide clarity through their writing. |
