| Anterior or ventral | front of the body |
| Posterior or dorsal | back of the body |
| superior | above or higher |
| inferior | below or lower |
| lateral | toward the side |
| distal | farther from the point of origin |
| proximal | closer to the point of orgin |
| ambi- | both (ambidextrous- able to use both hands) |
| dys- | difficult, painful, abnormal (dysplasia- abnormal cell development) |
| eu- | normal, good (eupnea- normal bleeding) |
| homo- | same (Homogeneous- of the same kind or nature ) |
| mal- | bad poor (Malnutrition- poor or inadequate nutrient) |
| -algia | pain (Neuralgia- nerve pain) |
| -emia | blood condition (Anemia- lack of red blood cells or hemoglobin) |
| -itis | inflammation (Dermatitis- inflammation of the skin |
| -lysis | Breakdown destruction (Hemolysis- destruction of red blood cells ) |
| -oid | resembling ( Keloid- scar like tissue growth ) |
| -opathy | disease ( Neuropathy- disease of the nerves ) |
| -pnea | breathing (Apnea- Absence or cessation of breathing) |
| -centesis | surgical puncture to remove fluid |
| -ectomy | surgical removal (Appendectomy- removal of the appendix ) |
| -ostomy | creation of an opening ( colostomy- Opening from colon to abdominal wall) |
| -otomy | cutting into, incision (Tracheotomy- incision into the trachea) |
| -orrhaphy | surgical suturing (Herniorrhaphy- surgical repair of a hernia ) |
| -opexy | surgical fixation ( Nephropexy- surgical fixation of a kidney) |
