cataract a large waterfall or a sudden rush of water; can also mean a medical condition causing clouding of the eye’s lens
recess a small space set back from the main area (such as a hollow or alcove); a short break from regular activity or work
tawny a warm, brownish-yellow color (often used to describe animal fur or hair)
mettle a person’s courage, resilience, and ability to face difficulty with spirit
besiege to surround a place with armed forces in order to capture it; to overwhelm someone with requests or pressure
trounce to defeat decisively or beat soundly in a competition or conflict
reproach an expression of disapproval or criticism; to blame or find fault with someone
lintel a horizontal support across the top of a door or window opening
precipice a very steep or vertical cliff; a dangerous situation that could lead to disaster
sentry a guard who watches and protects a place or group, often posted to keep watch for danger
