| titter | to laugh quietly or nervously, often in a restrained or embarrassed way. |
| conspicuous | easy to see or notice; obvious or attracting attention. |
| pleat | a fold made in cloth or fabric to create a pattern or shape (like on a skirt). |
| talisman | an object thought to bring good luck or have magical powers. |
| wizened | shriveled or wrinkled with age; appearing shrunken and old. |
| betrothed | engaged to be married; a person to whom someone is promised in marriage. |
| divan | a long, low sofa without arms that people can sit or lie on. |
| draught | a flow of air in a room (often called "draft"); can also mean a small serving of a drink. |
| exasperate | to annoy or frustrate someone greatly. |
| maxim | a short, clear statement expressing a general truth or rule of behavior (a saying). |
| venerable | deserving respect because of age, wisdom, or character. |
