| Term | Definition |

| Enjambment | the continuation of a phrase or sentence from one line to the next without any punctuation |
| Anaphora | the repetition of a word or words at the beginning of successive phrases |
| Anadiplosis | a word or phrase at the end of one sentence or clause and at the beginning of the subsequent one |
| Epistrophe | figure of speech in which one or more words repeat at the end of successive phrases, clauses, or sentences |
| Syndoche | a literary device in which a part of something is substituted for the whole |
| Cacophony | harsh sounds |
| euphony | pleasant sounds |
| caesura | a pause in a poem |
| assonance | the repetition of a vowel sound in nearby words and can be at the beginning, middle, or end of a word |
| Consonance | the repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning, middle, or end of the word |
