| CAMBRA | Stands for Caries Management by Risk Assessment and involves assessing a patient's risk for developing cavities and taking the right measures to treat and prevent them. |
| Caries | Tooth decay or cavities |
| Cariogenic | Causing tooth decay |
| Calculus | AKA Tartar, a hardened form of dental plaque that forms on teeth |
| Cavitation | Holes in the bone that have become infected, inflamed, or decay |
| Dental sealant | Thin protective coating applied to chewing surfaces to prevent tooth decay |
| Demineralization | Loss of essential minerals from tooth enamel |
| Disclosing agent | Tablet that stains plaque, revealing it |
| Early Childhood Caries | Decayed, missing, or filled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth in a young child |
| Fermentable Carbohydrates | Sugars and starches that can easily lead to demineralization of tooth enamel |
| Fluoride | Natural occurring mineral that prevents tooth decay and can remineralize the tooth enamel |
| Fluorosis | Abnormality (discoloration) of teeth that is cause by excessive fluoride intake during childhood |
| Incipient Caries | Early stages of tooth decay, demineralization of the tooth enamel. Appear as white and chalky spots. |
| Lactobacillus | Probiotic that plays a role in oral health, typically found in fermented foods. Combats harmful bacteria like Mutans Streptococci, which causes tooth decay. |
| Mutans Streptococci | Bacteria found in oral cavity that play a crucial role in tooth caries |
| Overt Decay | Breakdown of tooth enamel |
| Pellicle | Thin protein film that protects the enamel |
| Plaque | Sticky film of bacteria on teeth, and can lead to cavities and gum disease if not removed |
| Preventative Dentistry | Branch of dentistry focused on maintaining optimal oral health and preventing tooth diseases like gum disease and tooth decay |
| Rampant Caries | Widespread and rapid growing cavities |
| Remineralization | Repairs and strengthen tooth enamel by replenishing lost minerals. Crucial for preventing tooth decay and maintaining oral health. |
| Systemic Fluoride | Fluoride ingested and is incorporated into the formation of tooth structures |
| Topical Fluoride | Fluoride applied directly to the surfaces of the teeth to help prevent dental caries |
| Xerostomia | Dry mouth caused by reduced or absent flow of saliva |
| Xylitol | Naturally occurring sugar substitute that helps fight cavities and enhance oral health |
