Important Terms

TermDefinition
Phenomena An appearance or immediate object of awareness in experience. The 'who' or 'what' of a study.
Research Question An interrogative sentence that highlights the phenomenon to be studied and indicates what the researcher wants to know about it.
Validity does it effectively measure the variables it set out to measure?
Reliability can it replicate? The ability to measure the desired variables accurately and consistently over time and setting. (Internal and External)
Approach The style/method used to study a given phenomena.
Quality Criteria Criteria/characteristics used throughout a study to ensure that the study is completed in a satisfactory way.
Thick Description the richness and depth to understanding people’s perspectives. This is above and beyond a detailed description and entails understanding motivations and inner perspectives.
Congruence of Philosophy/Methods Qualitative researchers work to be transparent about the philosophy/worldview they approach their research with and match that to an appropriate method of research.
Researcher as Instrument The researcher is an active and subjective part of the data collection and part of the instrument itself.
Emic Perspective the perspective of the individual. It is understanding the emotion, culture, and innerness of a person and situation rather than observing the outer relationships of that person or situation.
Multiple Constructed Realities the belief that individual perceptions are what give meaning to reality. Each perception can be different and ‘truth’ lies in uncovering those perceptions which can vary from person to person.
