Lab equipment

TermDefinition
Beaker hold, mix, heat, and pour liquids for experiments
Erlenmeyer flask mixing, heating, and storing liquids, easier to pour
Test tube hold, mix, and heat small quantities of liquid or solid samples
Graduated cylinder measure the volume of liquids with a high degree of accuracy
Watch glass weighing solids, evaporating liquids, and covering beakers to prevent contamination
Funnel guide the transfer of liquids and solids between containers and to separate components of a mixture through filtration or extraction
Filter flask conical design with a sidearm for connecting a vacuum hose to create suction, which pulls the liquid through a filter in a Büchner funnel while the solid residue is left behind in the funnel
Buchner funnel quickly and efficiently separate solid particles from a liquid
Pipet accurately and precisely measure and transfer small volumes of liquid
Vacuum hose connect vacuum pumps and equipment to create and maintain a low-pressure environment for tasks like filtration, aspiration, and freeze-drying
Bunsen burner heating substances, sterilizing equipment, and conducting experiments that require a controlled open flame
Ring stand securely support and hold laboratory equipment, such as glassware and clamps
Clamp hold apparatus in a stable and fixed position
Neoprene adaptor flexible, autoclavable connector in filtration assemblies, providing a seal between a funnel stem and a receiving flask
Thermometer measure temperature including monitoring chemical reactions, determining phase transition points like boiling and freezing, and ensuring precise temperature control
Test tube rack safe storage, transport, and to keep samples organized and accessible
Wire guaze support glassware, such as beakers and flasks, during heating
Spatula transfer, scoop, mix, and manipulate small amounts of solid chemicals and other samples
Hoffman screw clamp precisely control the flow of a liquid or gas through a flexible tube by using a screw to compress the tubing
Crucible tongs safely grasp and handle hot crucibles, beakers, and flasks, minimizing the risk of burns and spills
Iron forceps/tweezers grasp, manipulate, and transfer small or delicate items with precision
Stirring rod manual mixing but can also break up emulsions, induce crystallization, and direct flow of liquids during pouring
Wash bottle rinsing glassware, dispensing small amounts of liquid with controlled flow, and storing solutions like DI water or specific solvents
Test tube holder safely and securely hold test tubes
Test tube brush remove residue, stains, and other contaminants to ensure the glassware is clean
Curvette Hold liquid samples for spectroscopic analysis, such as measuring how much light a sample absorbs or transmits
Spectrophotometer Measures amount of photons absorbed
Spectrometer measure the interaction of light or other radiation with a sample to analyze its properties

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
