| Weathering | The process that breaks down rocks into smaller pieces by wind, water, ice, or temperature changes. |
| Erosion | The movement of weathered rock or sediment from one place to another by water, wind, ice, or gravity. |
| Deposition | The process in which sediment, soil, and rocks are dropped or settled in a new location. |
| Sediment | Small pieces of rock, minerals, or organic material created by weathering and moved by erosion. |
| Chemical Weathering | The breakdown of rocks through chemical reactions that change the rock’s composition. |
| Physical (Mechanical) Weathering | The breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition. |
| Wind Erosion | The process of wind carrying away small particles of rock, sand, or soil. |
| Temperature (as a Cause of Weathering) | Heat and cold cause rocks to expand and contract, which makes them crack and break apart. |
| Ice (as a Cause of Weathering and Erosion) | When water freezes in rock cracks, it expands and breaks the rock apart (ice wedging). |
| Gravity (as a Cause of Erosion) | The force that pulls rock, soil, and sediment downhill. |
