TermDefinition
Type 1 Diabetes results from an autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic B cells. Usually develops in those younger than 30
Type 2 Diabetes Development attributed to a much more sedenctary lifestyle and lack of exercise. Usually develops in those 40+; however, increasingly more cases for those under 20 are occurring
Hyperglycemia abnormally high level of glucose (sugar) in the blood
Hypoglycemia abnormally low levels of glucose in blood
Hyperkalemia elevated levels of potassium in the blood
Glycosuria presence of glucose in urine
Prophylactic measures or treatments designed to prevent disease or a condition BEFORE it occurs
UTI uninary tract infection
xerostomia dry mouth
arthralgia joint pain
macroangiopathy damage or disease affecting the large blood vessels
microangiopathy damage or disease affecting small blood vessels
ketoacidosis buildup of acids (ketone) in the body; occurs when the body breaks down fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Leads to dangerously high level of acidity in the blood
