how does Daldry examine this? Using mise-en-scene, lighting, diaglouge and music. Daldry shows that individual experiences can both challege and reshape collective beliefs, revealing the transformative power of human connection.
how does Daldry explore billys individuality? Stephan Daldry explores how Billys individuality conflicts with the collective hypermasculine gender identies of the conservative working class commuity.
How does Daldry examine the expectations of individuality? use of a long shot of the boxing hall, empasises the signage declaring that boxing is ‘for boys’. The visual contrast between the large “BOYS” sign and the much smaller ‘GIRLS” sign highlights the patriarchal values embedded within the Durahms society.

how does Daldry show this Hegemonic masculinity? Daldry uses mid-shot with lowkey lighting to frame Billy isolated in the corner of a boxing ring.
what mise-en-scene is Dalrdy showing whn Billy is in the boxing ring? Billy’s outstretched arms from strong vector lines, creating a salient image that draws the viewers focus to his vulnerablity and discomfort when pressured to fight by his hypermasculine coach.
what digetic - sound is being used in the boxing ring scene? This discomfort is reinforced through the digetic sound of the coaches insult, “your like a fanny in a fit”, which exposes the toxic expectaions of masculinity imposed on boys.
whats the author/Dalrdy illustrating? Here, the director is illustrating masculinity exectations to inform Billy of what he shouldnt be like.
what is the Author/Daldry conveying? The director is effenciently conveying the adversity of collective and traditional gender expectaions and the audience can see that this would be challenging for Billy as an individual and his dreams of ballet.
