AP Chapter 10

TermDefinition
Muscle system movement, maintain posture, stabilize joints, heat via contract, protect, valves, control pupil size, & goose bumps
Epimysium sheath of dense, irregular CT
Perimysium middle layer surround fascicles
Endomysium a thin CT of collagen & reticular fibers surround each muscle fiber/cell
Muscle functions movement, maintain posture, stabilize joints, heat (contract), protect, valves, control pupil size, & goosebumps
Muscle fibers made out of myofibrils
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum smooth ER that stores, releases, & retrieve Ca++
T-tubules Sarcolemma extensions into deep of the muscle fiber
MT features Excitability, Elasticity, Extensibility, & Contractibility
Excitability sends an electrical signal wave (AP) along the entire length of membrane
Elasticity return back to its original wave
Extensibility stretch/expand
Contractibility pull an attachment points & shorten w/ force
Epimysium wraps the entire muscles
Sarcomere smallest contractile unit in the muscle fiber
Motor neuron carry the motor signal for contraction to muscle; can send the same signal for multiple muscles
Neuromuscular Junction connection between the motor neuron & muscle
Troponin a protein that controls the location of tropomyosin's location
Tropomyosin once Ca++ binds to troponin, this open for cross-bridge connection
End plate area of the Sarcolemma beneath the axon terminals
synaptic clef gap between sarcolemma and axon terminal
vesicles contains ACh
MP at rest Na+ out & K+ in; + out and - in
Muscle Twitch one contraction from one action potential
Muscle Twitch Latent, Contraction, & Relaxation
Latent Period Excitation period: release of Ca++ ions
Contraction Period Cross-bridge cycle
Relaxation Period time needed to pump Ca++ pump back to SE
ATP usage in Muscle Contractions detach cross-bridge; Ca++ pump; Na+/K+ pump
Creatine phosphate emergency ATP usage (40 sec last)
Aerobic respiration require O2
Anaerobic respiraction result lactic acid
Power stroke when ADP runs out, myosin rapidly runs back to its default position

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
