| Seasoning | - colonists' first year in the new world - not a lot to do in the new world - settlers would become depressed - very harsh first winter |
| Threats to Civility | - colonists were scared of becoming savages by influence of all the forests - also by the influence of the native americans - they formed a rigid society to combat this |
| Separatists | - Those colonists/pilgrims who believed that associating with the old world and its church at all would bring corruption - disregarded European church traditions - believed the new world was a chance for a new start |
| Non-Separatists | - Believed in the corruption of the european church but thought it could be saved - the new world was a chance to set an example to europe, to be a role model on how things should be done. |
| Roger Williams | - of the Massachusetts Bay Colony - Thought Non-Separatists were corrupt as the Church was - relations with native Americans - argued that all land claims were baseless - was banished for his beliefs - makes a new colony with total religious freedom. |
| Anne Hutchinson | - of the Massachusetts Bay colony - claimed she could physically see a persons aura and tell if they were sinners or not - challenged the very foundation of the colony and Christianity itself - very controversial figure - got banished |
| Antinomianism | - idea that believers are allowed to sin because only Belief in God is required to be saved |
| The Salem Witch Trials | - children start accusing adult women of being witches - women also accused other women - usually older accusing newer settlers - driven by a fear of change and new things - native americans were blamed of being witches and teaching children voodoo |
| Indentured Servitude | - The people who most wanted to go into the new world were poorer off - sponsors pay for someone's trip to the new world in return that they would work for them - Indentured servants were to work for 7 years or until they turned 21. |
| Slavery in Europe | - slavery fell out of favor after the renaissance - slavery as punishment for criminals, to pay off depts - people were not born into slavery - slavery also wasn't a race issue |
| Slavery in the New World | - slavery became very necessary to manage all the farms and agriculture - slavery was justified by the fact that Africans weren't Christian, and they were uncivilized - rights of Africans in the new world slowly started getting ripped away. |
| The Middle Passage | - slaves were treated as cargo so they would be packed in the ship so tightly ignoring any needs of theirs - many died, most from suffocation but also, sickness, starvation, and murder. |
