Biomolecules

Unit 1 Vocab

TermDefinition
Abiogenesis The idea that life could come from non-living matter
Biogenesis The principle that living things only come from other living things
Biomolecule A large molecules made by living organisms(carbs, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acid)
Carbohydrate A biomolecule made of sugars and it provides energy and can give structure
Lipid A biomolecule that stores energy and makes up cell membranes
Protein A biomolecule made of amino acids that does most cell work like building structures and speeding up reactions
Nucleic Acid A biomolecule that stores and carries genetic information
Enzyme A type of protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the cell
Monomer A small, basic unit that can join with others to form larger molecules
Polymer A large molecule made up of many repeating monomers
Phospholipid A special lipid with a water-loving head and water-fearing tails and are the main component of cell membranes
Waxes A type of lipid of that forms waterproof coverings in plants and animals
