Biology

terms for a cell

TermDefinition
mitochondria Job: where cellular respiration happens-breaks down food; powerhouse
Golgi Apparatus Job: gets vesicles of protein from the ER. Processes, sorts, & ships proteins where needed
Lipid Bilayer the 2 layers of phospholipids that make up a cell membrane
centrosome/ centrioles AnimalCellOnly! Job: appear during cell division; help cell divide by pulling chromosomes apart
Lysosome AnimalCellOnly!.Job: can do programmed cell death;break down dead things (food, bacteria, old cell parts, ect)
cell (plasma) membrane Job: controls what goes in&out of cell
Cilium A short, hair-like extension of a cell used either for movement or as a censory organelle
chromatin The genetic material of eukaryotic cells consisting of DNA and associated protiens
Nucleolus Job: makes rRNA which makes ribosomes;assembles ribosomes
Nucleus Job: protects DNA that controls activities of cell
central vacuole PlandCellsOnly!Job:storage center
cell wall PlantCellsOnly! protect and maintain shape
granum stack of disk-shaped thylokoids within a chlolroplast
leucoplast stores startches, lipids, and proteins
chloroplast where photosynthesis happens; converts light energy from sun-chemical energy in sugar
RER makes proteins/ribosomes; packages them for secretion
SER makes lipids(membrane)
ribosomes make proteins
capsule a protective coating found outside the cell wass of many bacteria
nucleoid the non-membrane region in prokaryotic cells that contains most of the genetic material
flagellus move entire cell through extra cellular fluid
cytoskeleton give the cell shape; can also move organelles around; provide structural support for animal cells (who don't have a cell wall)
cytoplasm holds everything in place
eukaryote an organism with cells having a true nucleus as well as membrane-bound organelles
prokaryote an organism with cells lacking a true nucleus and mebrane-bound organelles
organelle specialized structures within the cell that work together to help the cell function
organ system a group of two or more organs that work together to perform a particular function
organ a structure made of two or more tissues that work together to perform a particular function
tissue a group of cell that are specialized to perform a particular function
multicellular organism composed of many cells that may organize into tissues-organs=organ systems
colony cells divide labor but each cell can detach and live on their own
unicellular organism composed of one cell
cell theory all living things are made of cells; cells are the basic unit of life; all cells come from other cells

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
