Challenging English vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
sovereign (soberano) Independent; having its own government and laws.
Cherokee Nation (nación cherokee) The Cherokee people and their government before removal.
vast region (región vasta / extensa) A very large area of land.
adjacent (adyacente / vecino) Next to or beside something.
treaty (tratado) An official agreement between two groups or countries.
guaranteed (garantizado) Promised that something would be true or protected.
off-limits (prohibido / fuera de límites) Not allowed to enter or use.
forcibly removed (expulsado por la fuerza) Made to leave by the government or soldiers.
migration (migración) Moving from one place to another to live.
exposure (exposición al clima) Being in cold, heat, or bad weather without protection.
detention (detención) Being held and not allowed to leave.
Indian Removal Act (Ley de Traslado de Indios) A U.S. law that allowed the government to move Native Americans to new lands.
authorized (autorizado) Officially gave permission.
encroached (invadieron / se apoderaron de) Moved onto someone’s land without permission.
relocate / relocation (reubicar / reubicación) To move people to a new place to live.
settlers (colonos) People who move to live on new land.
detention camps (campos de detención) Places where people are kept and cannot leave.
starvation (hambre extrema) Dying or suffering because there is not enough food.
territory (territorio) Land that belongs to a country but is not a state.
injustice (injusticia) When something is unfair or people are treated wrongly.
