Characteristics of life The common features shared by living organisms
Continuity of life The succession overtime whereby living organisms arise from other living organisms
Metabolism All the chemical reactions that take place in an organisms
Life Anything demonstrating the characteristics of living things is said to be alive
Organisation The ordered way in which living organisms are arranged both structurally and socially
Nutrition The process by which an organism obtains and uses food from its environment
Excretion The removal of waste products of metabolism from cells
Response An organisms ability to react to internal and external changes in its environment
Reproduction An organisms ability to produce new individuals of the same type
Growth An increase in the size of an organism
Stimulus Any change in an organisms environment
Receptor A structure that can sense a change in an organisms environment
Classification System of grouping organisms based on common characteristics
Homeostasis All the ways that an organism maintains the best internal conditions for metabolism
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food
Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food so must find and take in food instead
Organism A living thing
Biogenesis All living things are produced by another living thing
Biodiversity The variety of living things in an area
Biosphere All the places on earth that support living things
Biomolecules The chemicals used by organisms
