| resource | a supply that can be used when their is a need |
| ecosystem | A system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment |
| competition | the struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources |
| nutrient | chemical substance that an organism needs to sustain life |
| producer | An organism that can make its own food. |
| consumer | An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| decomposer | An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms |
| herbivore | A consumer that eats only plants. |
| carnivore | A consumer that eats only animals. |
| omnivore | An animal that eats both plants and animals |
| algae | a very simple plant without stems or leaves that grows in or near water. |
| fungi | An organism that absorbs nutrients from the environment. |
| microbe | microscopic life form; microorganism; germ |
| microorganism | Any organism of microscopic or submicroscopic size. |
| organic matter | remains of something that was once alive |
| organic waste | waste material from living organisms |
| atom | the basic unit of a chemical element. |
| molecule | A group of atoms bonded together |
| predator | An animal that hunts other animals for foo |
| prey | Animal hunted or caught for food |
| aquatic | relating to water |
| interdependent | dependent on one another |
| chemical reaction | the process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances |
| reactant | A chemical substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction |
| product | A substance produced in a chemical reaction |
| biodiversity | the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. |
| constraints | A limit to the design process. Constraints may be such things as appearance, funding, space, materials, and human capabilities. |
| habitat | Place where an organism lives |
| moisture | a slight wetness caused by water or another liquid |
| stomata | Small openings on the underside of a leaf through which oxygen and carbon dioxide can move |
