Chem 2 test Lewstru

TermDefinition
VESPR/Molecular geometry Used to predict the shape of a molecule, based on the repulsion between electron pairs around the central atom. How many things are attached, and number of unshared pairs.
How would you describe the geometry of a molecule that has six atoms bonded to the central atom? Octa geometry
How can electronegativity be used to distinguish between an ionic and covalent bond. calculate the difference in electronegativity between the two atoms. (1.7-2.0)
Two elements that are exceptions to the octet rule Hydrogen and beryllium
Metallic Bonding/what model is used? Involves the sharing of valance electrons among many metal atoms "sea of electrons" is used to represent metallic bonding.
Resonance structure one or two or more possible Lewis structures that can be drawn for a molecule that cannot be adequately represented by 1 Lewis structure.
What Molecular geom would Hbr and Cl2 have? Linear Molecular Geometry Hbr is a diatomic molecule with a single bond. Both molecules have two atoms bonded together resulting in a linear shape.
What molecular shape would result from zero lone pairs and four atoms bonded to the central atom. A tetrahedral molecular shape.
Why are most metals malleable and ductile, but ionic crystals are not. This is because their metallic bonding "the sea of electrons" allows metal atoms to slide past each other without breaking bonds. Crystals have strong electrostatic forces holding ions in making them have lattice causing them to be brittle.
Hydrogen bonding a special type of dipole-dipole interaction that occurs when an hydrogen atom is bonded to a highly electronegative atom.
Dipole-Dipole forces intermolecular forces that occur between polar molecules
London dispersion forces weak intromolecular forces that result from the attraction between temperatures dipole included molecules.
How did London forces get their name? Named after Fritz London first to discover them.
What type of inter molecular force contributes to the high boiling point of water? hydrogen bonding.
Hybrid orbitals. formed by the combonation of atomic orbitals within a single atom.
3 major types of chem bonding Covelant, ionic, Metallic.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
