| Enteric coated tablet | dissolves in the intestines, contains a protective layer to protect against dissolving in the stomach acid |
| Tincture | Alcohol with extracts from plants |
| Paste | Stiff ointments that don't melt at body temp. 20% solid |
| Solution | An active ingredient is completely dissolved in a liquid vehicle |
| Syrup | A thick sugary solution |
| Film | Oral medication strips that dissolved rapidly on or under the tongue |
| Sublingual tablet | under the tongue placement |
| Emulsion | a liquid mixture of unblendable liquids |
| Capsule | Soft shell: filled with liquid. Hard Shell: filled with granules, 2 parts 1) body 2) cap |
| Cream | less greasy bc more water than oil, absorb readily and wash off easily |
| Scored tablet | tablet can be split |
| Enema | use of fluid into the rectum to evacuate bowels |
| Chewing gum | delivers medication through the mucous membranes in the mouth (ex. Nicotine gum) |
| Reconstituted suspension | The medication is supplied in a dry (powder or granular) form because it is unstable in liquid form for extended periods. |
| Intravenous (IV | a sterile, liquid preparation administered directly into the veins |
| Aerosol | Requires an inhaler device to deliver medication via gaseous pressure |
| Ophthalmic drop | sterile, liquid medications applied directly to the eye's surface |
| Collodion | Liquids that dry as flexible films on the skin (ex. Liquid bandaid) |
| Transdermal patch | deliver meds through the skin into bloodstream, controlled release through the skin |
| Implant | devices for insertion under the skin for slow release of the medication |
| Orally disintegrating tablet | Fast-dissolving; rapidly disintegrating on the tongue |
| Suppository | dissolves in rectum or vagina, can be systemically or locally |
| Powder | uniform particles. applied externally/topically to absorb moisture |
| Tablet | Solid dosage form, compressed powder, swallowed, break apart, dissolve in the digestive tract |
| Gel | Thick viscous gel-like, leaves no residue |
| Liniment | Topical. Mixtures of various substances in oil, alcohol solutions of soap. Used for muscle relief (heat producing) |
| Nasal spray | Requires a pump dispenser, used for instilling meds in the nose |
| Chewable tablet | slightly faster onset of action (ex. Anatacids, vitamins, etc) |
| Intramuscular | a sterile liquid preparation of a drug that is administered via injection deep into a skeletal muscle mass |
| Otic drop | ear drop |
| Spirit | alcoholic solution that contains aromatic ingredients like peppermint (high alcohol content) |
| Suspension | liquid mixture in which finely divided, undissolved drug particles are evenly distributed in a liquid medium |
| Buccal tablet | placed between the cheeks and gums, dissolves directly to the bloodstream |
| Lotion | Spread thinly, medicated shampoos are lotions, thinner than cream, have more water |
| Ointment | ung. Thick greasy barrier on the skin. 20% water 80% oil |
| Vaginal tablet | placed in the vagina, topical, active ingredient absorbed through vaginal lining |
| Inhalant | contains a fine powder that an inhaler device delivers through the nose or mouth |
| Elixir | Sweetened, flavored solution with an alcohol base |
| Effervescent tablet | Bubbling tablets release carbon dioxide and dissolved in water |
