Solubility

TermDefinition
Solute the substance being dissolved
Solvent the substance that does the dissolving
Aqueous solution a solution where water is the solvent
Ionic bond when 2 or more atoms try to gain electrons or get rid of electrons to match the number of the nearest noble gas
Molecular compound when they dissolve, they spread uniformly throughout the solvent and don’t break apart into atoms
Ionic compound when they dissolve, the chunks of solute break up into ions
Dissociation the breaking apart of a compound into ions in an aq solution
Electrolyte will dissolve in water
Nonelectrolyte won't dissolve in water
Weak electrolyte will only partially dissociate
Strong electrolyte will completely dissociate
Solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve in water
Nitrates (NO3-) soluble
Acetates (C2H3O2-) soluble
Perchlorates (ClO4-) soluble
Group 1 salts (H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) soluble
Ammonium salts (NH4+) soluble
Chlorides (anything with Cl) soluble, except for Pb, Ag, Hg
Bromides (anything with Br) soluble, except for Pb, Ag, Hg
Iodides (anything with I) and Sulfates (SO4-2) soluble, except for Pb, Ba, Sr, Hg
Carbonates (CO3-2) and Phosphates (PO4-3) insoluble, except for ammonium and group 1 salts
Hydroxides (OH-) and Sulfides (anything with S) insoluble, except for Ca, Sr, Ba, Group 1
Complete ionic equation shows everything in the mixture as it actually appears
Net ionic equation shows only what reacts
Spectator ion things that don’t participate in the reaction and end up the same as they were before

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
