54-40 or Fight! def: slogan advocating for the US to claim Oregon territory up to latitude 54* 40' sig: showed desire for US expansion/Manifest Destiny and tensions between the US and Great Britain
James K. Polk def: 11th president of US; known for strong advocacy for Manifest Destiny sig: shaped territorial boundaries of US through territorial acquisitions and military conflicts
Webster-Ashburton Treaty def: resolved territory dispute between Maine and British Canada; also settled Minnesota boundary sig: established a clear boundary between Canada and US and improved diplomatic relations
Zachary Taylor def: 12th president of US; known for military leadership during the Mexican-American war sig: his leadership style and political stance made him a national hero, contributing to US expansion

Popular Sovereignty def: government is created and sustained by the consent of its people through elected representation sig: gave settlers the ability to decide whether they would allow slavery or not; reflected democracy
Compromise of 1850 def: set of measures to ease tensions between North and South; California's admission as a free state and stricter fugitive slave laws sig: tried to balance interests but failed; set stage for more conflict
