| glacier | The process whereby glaciers recede and sweep away material creatign u-shaped valleys |
| fiord | long, narrow, deep inlet between steep cliffs that glacial motion carved into the land |
| geiser | hot springs formed from water heated by magma that rises to the earth's surface and shoots into the air |
| North Atlantic drift | warm current that continues from the Gulf stream, crosses the Atlantic ocean, and flows along the coast of northwestern Europe |
| Hydroelectric energy | Energy generated by the use of running water |
| geothermal energy | the energy in steam |
| welfare states | country that assumes primary responsibility for the social welfare of its citizens from the cradle to the grave |
| euthanasia | physician assisted suicide |
| secularism | a belief system that rejects or excludes religion |
| peat | dense layer of partially decayed plant material usually found in bogs |
| green space | an area of grass, trees, or other vegetation set aside in an urban area |
