contusion injury to underlying tissues without breaking the skin and is characterized by discoloration
ecchymosis large irregular area of purplish discoloration due to bleeding under the skin
purpura appearance of multiple purple discolorations on the skin caused by bleeding underneath the skin
petechiae very small, pinpoint hemorrhages that are less than 2mm in diameter
hematoma caused by injury, is a swelling of clotted blood trapped in tissues
dihiscance busting open of a surgical wound
eschar (scab) dead-crust like tissue found in a full thickness wound
macule macula) discolored flat spot that is less than 1cm in diameter
nodule solid, raised skin lesion that is larger than 0.5cm in diameter and deeper than a papule
papule small, raised red lesion that is less than 0.5cm in diameter and does not contain pus
plaque scaly, solid raised area of closely spaced papules
scales flakes or dry patches made up of excess dead epidermal cells
verrucae (warts) small, hard skin lesions caused by human papillomavirus
wheal (welt) small bump that itches
abscess closed pocket containing pus that is caused by a bacterial infection
purulent producing or containing pus
exudate fluid, such as pus, that leaks out of an infected wound
pustule (pimple) small, circumscribed lesion containing pus
vesicle small, blister less than 0.5 cm in diameter containing watery fluid
bulla large blister that is usually more than 0.5 cm in diameter
pressure ulcer (bedsore) open ulcerated wound that is caused by prolonged pressure of an area
ulcer open lesion of the skin or mucous membrane resulting in tissue loss around edges
eczema form of persistent recurring dermatitis characterized by redness, itching, and dryness
dermatitis inflammation of the skin
contact dermatitis rash caused by repeated contact with irritant
pruritus associated with most forms of dermatitis
erythema redness of skin due to capillary dilation
psoriasis common skin disorder characterized by flare-ups in which red papules covered silvary scales
cellulitis acute, rapidly spreading bacterial infection within the connective tissues characterized by malaise, swelling, warmth, and red streaks
Furuncles large, tender, swollen areas caused by a staphococcal infection around hair follicles
carbuncle cluster connected furuncles
gangrene death of tissue, eating sore
fungle yeast, condidiasis
keloid abnormally raised or thickened scar that expands beyond boundaries of the original incision
lipoma benign, slow-growing fatty tumor located between the skin and muscle layer
nevus small, dark skin growth that develops from melanocytes in the skin
Papilloma Benign, superficial, wart-like growth on epithelial tissue or elsewhere in the body
