AP Psych - SEE/HEAR

Seeing and Hearing Test

QuestionAnswer
pupil regulate the amount of light reaching the retina
cornea covers iris, provides most of the eyes optical power and focuses light, protects the eye, provides stru
aqueous humor Fluid that is constantly produced and drained to nourish the eye and maintain its shape
iris muscle, colored portion of eye, with an adjustable circular opening, the pupil in the center, that regulates the amount of light that can enter the eye
Lens helps bring rays of light to focus on the retina
Vitreous humor Fills two-thirds of the eye between the lens and the retina and provides a path for light to reach the retina.
retina receive images produced by the lens and triggers nerve impulses that pass via the optic nerve to the brain.
Blind spot exit point for nerve fibers from the retina to the brain, no rods or cones
optic nerve sensory fibers that transmit sight impulses to the brain.
Fovea where rods/cones are, Processing the visual information from the center of our field of view, helps to minimize light scatter and improve the accuracy of visual signals, and the ability to process fine details contributes to our sense of depth perception.
Sclera Helps maintain shape, size, and also forms a tough, protective outer layer that shields the delicate internal structures of the eye
How does the eye transform light energy into neural messages? phototransduction, Rods/cones convert photons into chemical + electrical signals, processed by other neurons in the retina before traveling down the optic nerve to the brain, where they are interpreted as images
Rods peripheral vision, black and white, movement
Cones color
pinna the outer ear, the visible part of the ear (opening unto the head) that protrudes from our heads (design to catch sound waves) It direct sound waves into the ear canal (auditory canal)
Tympanic Membrane The eardrum, Sound waves make the eardrum vibrate
middle ear Sound waves travel to vibrate the bones (auditory ossicles) of the ear
Cochlea A coiled, bony, fluid-filled tube in the inner ear through which sound waves trigger nerve impulses on the basilar membrane.
place theory Idea that different parts of the inner ear detect different sound frequencies. High pitches are sensed near the entrance, low pitches near the end.
frequency theory We hear pitch based on HOW FAST the hair cells vibrate
volley theory A theory of pitch perception proposing that groups of auditory neurons fire in rapid succession, or "volleys", to encode the frequency of sounds above 1000 Hz.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
