Skin and Subcutaneous

Most important function of the skin It acts as the first line of defense in protecting the body from diseases by providing an external barrier
Fun Fact about skin Skin is the largest Organ in the body
Describe the major structure of the skin Protection, temperature regulation, and sensation
Three layers of skin Epidermis, Dermis, Hypodermis
Epidermis The outermost layer of the skin further divided into 5-6 thinner layers (limited blood supply and contains no blood vessels)
Dermis Thick, underlying layer of the skin that is composed of vascular connective tissue arranged in two layers. Known as "True Skin", contains blood vessels, nerves, involuntary muscles, sweat glands, oil glands and hair follicles.
Subcutaneous a passageway for nerves and blood vessels (connective tissue composed of lipocytes, fat cells) located below the skin
Eccrine glands responsible for cooling the body
Apocrine glands located in the armpits and groin. May be responsible unpleasant body odor
Perspiration The process of sweating
Sebaceous Glands a small gland in the skin which secretes a lubricating oily matter (sebum) into the hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair.

Meissner's corpuscles Provides sensitivity to light touch
Pacinian corpuscles ending of a sensory nerve that acts as a receptor for pressure and vibration.
stratum granulosum a layer of the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin
keratinocytes the most common type of cell in the epidermis, forming the outer layer of the skin, hair, and nails
Hypodermis the deepest layer of the skin that attaches the skin to underlying muscle and bone
Stratum Corneum the deepest layer of the skin that attaches the skin to underlying muscle and bone
Homeostasis A major process by which the body works to keep all its structures and functions in balance
Hair main function is to protect the skin, composed of a strong structural protein called keratin , grows within a hallow tube called the follicle.
Nails Serves the finger and toes as protective plates and enhances the sensation of the finger tips and toe tips
Sudoriferous (sweat glands) located in the dermis, provide one means of thermoregulation for the body
Sebaceous glands secrete and oily, acidic substance called sebum, which helps to lubricate hair and the surface of the skin, key in inhibiting the growth of bacteria
Adipose yellowish fat found in Subcutaneous Fascia
