20 Element Atomic #s
For remembering how to identify the first 20 elements by their number of protons
| Atomic Number | Element | Fun Fact |
|---|---|---|
Hydrogen | The most abundant element in the universe
Helium | Has the lowest melting and boiling points
Lithium | Used in the first man-made nuclear fusion reaction
Beryllium | Found in Emerald and Aquamarine crystals; used in space telescopes to withstand high temperatures
Boron | Burns green (used in fireworks); second hardest element; strengthens cell walls in plants
Carbon | Diamonds are made from crystallized carbon, which forms under high pressure and heat
Nitrogen | Makes up the majority of Earth's atmosphere; key component in DNA; extremely common in explosives; what Mr. Spang is using to make ice cream
Oxygen | Third most abundant element in the universe; excited oxygen atoms are responsible for the green and red colors in the aurora borealis; solid oxygen is magnetic
Fluorine | Fluoride ions (Fluoride with an extra electron) are added to toothpaste to prevent tooth decay
Neon | It's actually colorless, but turns reddish-orange when electric currents pass through it
Sodium | Your body loses sodium when sweating (along with other elements); males of certain butterfly species collect sodium for mates, a behavior known as "puddling"
Magnesium | Burns white; common in epsom salts
Aluminum | Most abundant metal in Earth's crust; used to be considered more valuable than gold
Silicon |
Phosphorus |
Sulfur |
Chlorine |
Argon |
Potassium |
