How do you classify fibers as either natural or man made? Natural - animals, plants, or minerals mined from ground. Polymers. Man Made - made by joining together monomers to form polymers
How can you analyze fibers? Microscopes, burn tests, dissolving in various liquids
List the types of natural fibers Animal, plant, mineral
Where do natural fibers come from? Animal - hair, fur, webbing (proteins) Plant - seed, leaf, fruit (cellulose) Mineral - fiber glass, asbestos (neither protein or cellulose)
What is the most common natural fiber overall and most common animal fiber? Natural - cotton Animal - wool
List the different types of man-made fibers, give examples Synthetic (polyester, nylon, acrylic, acetate) Regenerated (rayon)
Identify and describe the weave patterns Plain - one strand over, under Basket - double strand over, under Twill - over, under, every two Satin - over, over, over, under Leno - twisting warp before crossing over weft
Characteristics used to identify fibers color, thickness, texture, flame color, reaction to flame, odor, ash, continuous or sputtering flame
Properties of fibers that are most useful for forensic comparisons color, diameter, cross sectional, shape, chemical composition
What is the difference between thread, yarn, and textile? Yarn is a long continuous strand of interlocked fiber, thread is a type of yarn but thinner and stronger, textile is the finished material made from yarn or thread (like clothing)
