Archaeology - The scientific study of historic or prehistoric peoples and their cultures by analysis of their artifacts such as tools, pottery, jewelry, graves, buildings and other remains. A branch of anthropology.
Primates Omnivorous mammals known for the use of hands, varied locomotion, and by complex flexible behavior involving a high level of social interaction and cultural adaptability.
BP Unit of measuring years past, meaning “before present”
Behavior what a living thing does or how it acts (what choices it makes) while alive. Some behaviors are natural (instincts) while most behaviors are learned while living
Last Common Ancestor (LCA) the most recent individual from which all the organisms of the set are descended
Adaptation changes in animal species over time to survive in an environment (‘a fortunate mutation’)
Culture 1. the way information is passed from person to person, and from older to younger. 2. A name marking a unique group of people with their own beliefs and items like art.
Hominids (apes) A family of primates that includes humans, their ancestors and related species, and great apes (gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans).
Anthropology The study of humans, early hominids and primates. They study the biology and behavior of primates, including language, culture, societies, as well as biological and material remains.
Distinct unique, recognizably different
Bipedalism A species’ regular movement is with the use of two legs.
Hominin Species related to H. sapiens that lived after the LCA split from genus Pan.
Hominin includes genus: Ardipithecus, Australopithecus, and Homo.
Climate weather patterns in an area over a long period of time
Glacier slow moving, giant river of ice
Drought a long time with little to no rain
Marrow Fatty, nutritious tissue inside bones, makes blood cells
