IS UN 1 - Lesson 4
States of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| solid | -a state of matter that has a definite shape and volume -its particles are tightly packed together and vibrate in place |
| liquid | -a state of matter that has a definite volume, but does not have a definite shape. (Takes the shape of its container.) -its particles are less tightly packed and can move and slide past one another |
| gas | a state of matter that has no definite shape or volume -the particles are farther apart than particles in liquids or solids |
| volume | the amount of space that a substance or object takes up |
| evaporation | a process through which a liquid changes into a gas |
| condensation | The process through which a gas changes into a liquid |
| changes of state of matter | A change occurs when energy is added or lost |
| adding energy | The particles start to move more quickly - enough energy will cause a change in state of matter. |
| energy is lost | The particles slow down and move closer - if enough energy is lost, this will cause a change in the state of matter. |
