2-2 Cell Structure and Function

| nucleus | the control center of the cell that holds the DNA |
| mitochondria | the powerhouse of the cell; it makes ATP energy for the cell to use |
| cell membrane | the flexible, outer layer that controls what goes in and out of the cell |
| chloroplast | uses sunlight to make food (glucose) through photosynthesis, found in plant cells |
| cell wall | a stiff outer layer that gives shape and support to plant cells. |
| ribosomes | the tiny structures that make proteins for the cell |
| golgi body | the packaging center that sorts and sends out proteins |
| endoplasmic reticulum (ER) | the transport system that moves materials around the cell |
| cytoplasm | the jelly-like fluid that fills the cell and holds organelles in place |
| shape of animal cells | round |
| shape of plant cells | rectangular |
| two organelles that are only found in plant cells | cell wall and chloroplast |
