2-1 Characteristics of Cells (cell size, cell theory, prokaryote and eukaryote)

cell theory lists the three basic characteristics of all cells and organisms
eukaryote a living thing whose cells have a nucleus and other organelles surrounded by membranes
prokaryote a living thing made of cells that do NOT have a nucleus or other membrane-covered organelles
cell the smallest unit of life that can carry out all the basic functions of living things
organism any living thing, such as an animal, plant, fungus or bacteria
Theodor Schwann concluded that all ANIMALS were made of cells
Matthias Schleiden concluded that all PLANTS were made of cells
Rudolph Virchow confirmed that all cells come from preexisting cells
Robert Hooke viewed cork under a microscope and named what he saw cells
Anton van Leeuwenhoek developed a more powerful microscope and observed bacteria and protozoa he called "animalcules"
