2-1 Characteristics of Cells (cell size, cell theory, prokaryote and eukaryote)

| eukaryote | a living thing whose cells have a nucleus and other organelles surrounded by membranes |
| prokaryote | a living thing made of cells that do NOT have a nucleus or other membrane-covered organelles |
| cell | the smallest unit of life that can carry out all the basic functions of living things |
| organism | any living thing, such as an animal, plant, fungus or bacteria |
| Theodor Schwann | concluded that all ANIMALS were made of cells |
| Matthias Schleiden | concluded that all PLANTS were made of cells |
| Rudolph Virchow | confirmed that all cells come from preexisting cells |
| Robert Hooke | viewed cork under a microscope and named what he saw cells |
