Musculoskeletal System Pathology

TermDefinition
Sprain Traumatic injury to ligaments of a joint.
Strain Overstretching of muscle or a tendon
Dislocation Bone that is completely out of its joint socket.
Subluxation Partial dislocation
Amputation The surgical removal of all or part of a body appendage such as an arm or leg.
Discography An invasive diagnostic imaging procedure used to determine if a specific intervertebral disc in the spine is the source of a patients chronic back pain.
Sternotomy A major surgical procedure that involves making an incision down the middle of the chest and through the breastbone.
Osteopathies Condition that affects bone tissue
Chondropathy Disease that affects cartilage
Chondromalacia softening of the cartilage
Osteoporosis loss of bone mass, which can result in bones being fragile and at risk for fractures
Osteitis deformans misshaped bone resulting from inflammation
Baker's cyst Cyst of synovial fluid in the popliteal area
Bursitis inflammation of a bursa
lateral epicondylitis inflammation of the tendon on the outer side of the elbow accompanied by pain and tenderness
Costochondritis Inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs.
Gout Type of arthritis due to excessive uric acid that causes crystals to form
Kyphosis Extreme curvature of the thoracic area of the spine
Exostosis abnormal condition of bony growth
Rhabdomyolysis Breakdown of striated/skeletal muscle
Greenstick Partially bent and partially broken
rhabdomyosarcoma Highly malignant tumor of skeletal muscle
polydactyly condition of more than five fingers or toes on each hand or foot
systemic scleroderma connective tissue disorder that causes hardening and thickening of the skin
Chondroma benign tumor of a cartilage
Talipes term also meaning clubfoot
Crepitus cackling sound heard in joints
Spinal stenosis Abnormal condition of narrowing of the spinal canal
Salter Harris Fracture Fracture of the epiphyseal plate in children
Scoliosis Lateral S curve on spine
Lordosis term that means swayback
Fractures that do not pierce the skin closed, simple, partial fractures
Non displaced Fractures The broken bones are still aligned
Displaced Fractures Ends of the fractured bones are not in alignment
Comminuted Fracture Bone is crushed and or shattered into multiple pieces
Greenstick Fracture Partially bent and partially broken. Common in children
Hairline Fracture Minor fracture appearing as a thin line on x-ray. May not extended through bone.
Impacted Fracture Broken bones with ends driven into each other
Setting Fracture aligned and immobilized
