Digestive System

Reviewing the anatomy of the digestive system

QuestionAnswer
mouth a cavity where food is chewed and ground by the teeth.
salivary glands They carry out the chemical digestion of carbohydrates.
stomach It is connected to the oesophagus through an opening called the cardia.
small intestines This is a very long tube.
large intestines It has three parts: the caecum, the colon and the rectum,
pancreas It produces digestive enzymes that help break down food in the small intestine.
liver It is the largest internal organ in the human body and a key player in metabolism, detoxification, and digestion.
gallbladder It is a small but important organ involved in the digestion of fats.
appendix It is a small, tube-like pouch attached to the beginning of the large intestine.
rectum It is the final section of the large intestine, serving as the last stop before waste leaves the body.
anus It is the final part of the digestive system, where solid waste (feces) leaves the body. It plays a key role in controlling defecation and maintaining continence.
