Cell theory States that all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells.
Organelle Specialized structure within a cell that performs a specific function (e.g., nucleus, mitochondria).
Chloroplast Organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs, converting sunlight into chemical energy.
Prokaryote A unicellular organism lacking a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles (e.g., bacteria).
Eukaryote A cell with a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists.
Endosymbiotic Theory that eukaryotic cells evolved from symbiotic relationships between ancient prokaryotes.
Exocytosis Active transport process where cells expel materials using vesicles that fuse with the membrane.
Endocytosis Active transport process where cells engulf external substances into vesicles.
Osmosis Passive movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane toward higher solute concentration.
Diffusion Passive movement of molecules from high to low concentration without energy input.
Facilitated Diffusion Passive transport using membrane proteins to help molecules cross the cell membrane.
Transport Protein Membrane protein that assists in moving substances across the cell membrane.
