How is blood agar differential? It shows if microbes can breakdown red blood cells and if red blood cells are broken down partiallly or completely
What types of bacteria is blood agar useful for identifying? Hemolytic bacter, such as Gram positive cocci: Staphylococcus, Stretococcus, Enterococcus
Why would we need to know if a patient had an infection with a species that performs hemolysis? Hemolyssi destroys red blood cells. With a decrease in red blood cells, the patient will have less oxygen delivered to tissues.
What are hemolysins? Exotoxins
What do hemolysins do? Break down red blood cells and hemoglobin
Why is it benifical for bacteria to perform hemolysis? To get the iron out of red blood cells
What is alpha-hemolysis and what does it look like on blood agar? Partial breakdown of red blood cells and hemoglobin Appears olive green dure to partial breakdown of hemoglobin
What is beta-hemolysis and what does it look like on blood agar? Complete breakdown of red blood cells and hemoglobin Appears clear due to complete breakdown
What is gamma-hemolysis and what does it look like on blood agar? No breakdown of red blood cells or hemoglobin Colonies appear normal on blood agar
