| scientific racism | nineteenth century theories of race, that brought a period of feverish investigation into origins, explanations, and classifications of race |
| Ethnocentrism | the judgment of other groups by ones standards and values |
| ontological equality | the philosophical and religious notion that all people are created equal |
| social Darwinism | Darwin's voluntary idea of survival of the fittest |
| One-drop rule | one drop of black makes a person black |
| miscegenation | interracial marriage |
| critical race theory | legal theory that asserts that race is not natural but rather is socially constructed in order to oppress nonwhites and that racism is inherent in US legal institutions |
| racialization | the formation of new racial identity by drawing ideological boundaries of difference around a formally unnoticed group of people |
| Prejudice | thoughts and feelings about an ethnic or racial group |
| discrimination | an act of prejudice |
| timid bigot | is prejudice but does not discriminate- a closeted racist |
| fair-weather liberal | not prejudice but does discriminate even without knowing |
| active bigots | people who are actively racist and prejudice |
| color-blind racism | view that racial inequality is perpetuated by a supposedly color-blind stance that ends up reinforcing historical and contemporary inequities, disparate impact, and institutional bias by ignoring them in favor of a technically neutral approach |
| instiutional racism | institutions and social dynamics that may seem race-neutral but actually end up disadvantaging minority groups |
| straight-line assimilation | immigrants arrive, settle in, mimic the practices and behaviors of the people who are already there, and achieve full assimilation in a newly homogenous country |
| primordialism | the strength of ethnic ties resides in deeply felt or primordial ties to ones culture |
| pluralism | the presence and engaged coexistence of numerous distinct groups in society |
| segregation | the legal or social practice of separating people on the basis on their race or ethnicity. B v B separate but equal |
| genocide | the mass killing of a particular population based on racial, ethnic, or religious traits |
| subaltern | a subordinate, oppressed group of people |
| collective resistance | an organized effort to change a power hierarchy on the part of a less powerful group in society |
| Native Americans | very diverse, whites conquered and put them on reservations, forced assimilation, real bad suicide and drop out rates |
| African Americans | arrived as indentured servants, high rates of poverty, health problems, unemployment and crime, new black immigrant groups rather not assimilate |
| Latinxs | sandwiched between whites and blacks, part of white race and as separate race |
| Asian Americans | perceived as labor threat, high average socioeconomic status, smooth assimilation labeled as the model minority |
| Middle Eastern Americans | most see them as Arab or Muslim, always depicted as wealthy, uncivilized, and sex crazed |
| whites | invisible knapsack of privileges, KKK guy made national association for advancement of white people to promote white supremacy and say whites are minorities |
| redlining | discriminatory practice of denying financial services like mortgages and insurance to residents of certain neighborhoods based on their racial or ethnic makeup |
