Day of the Dead

Questions about the Day of the Dead we learned in Spanish class.

QuestionAnswer
When is the Day of the Dead? Through the 1st and 2nd of November.
Why is Day of the Dead celebrated? To remember and honour friends and family members who have passed away.
How does the Day of the Dead counteract the negatives of remembering the dead? By recounting the good memories over the sadness.
Why is the Day of the Dead celebrated on 2 days and not just 1? The first is for children and the second is for adults.
What is the first day for children called? All Saints Day
What is the second day for adults called? Day of the Dead
How is someone counted for which day they will be remembered? The age they died, not how old they would be today.
Who started the Day of the Dead? The Aztecs
When did the Aztecs celebrate the dead? For the entire month of August.
What happens in many towns during this event? Both kids and adults will walk in a parade or host a carnival.
What happens in some towns during this event? Hint: This idea originally came from Africa. People would design giant puppets called mojigangos.
What do small groups of musicians do during the festivities? Walk around town and play music.
Where is Day of the Dead mostly celebrated? Mexico and other parts of Central America.
Where else is Day of the Dead celebrated? Throughout the US in places like Sante Fe, New Mexico, Los Angeles, California, and San Antonio, Texas.
Do other Hispanic countries celebrate Day of the Dead? Yes, all of them, but to a much lesser extent compared to countries in North America.
What is one way people celebrate this holiday? People create alters and leave their offerings to attract the spirits of the dead.
What are these alters called? Ofrendas
What do people leave on these alters? The dead person's favourite things like food, drinks, or toys if they were a child. They also put down incense, decorative papers, photos, decorations, flowers, candles, along with their favourite and important personal things.
What is an incense? A small, scented stick that produces smoke when burned believing the smoke will help guide spirits home.
What do Mexicans believe about Monarch butterflies? Monarch butterflies represent the souls of their loved ones returning as Monarch butterflies return from their migration each year just before the 1st of November.
What are calacas? Art made for the Day of the Dead by artist that are small skeleton sculptures for decorative purposes.
What is papel picado? Another type of art made for this day that's a decorative paper made by cutting holes in colourful tissue paper and is hung on alters and buildings like homes and on the streets.
What are some other things made for this day? Sugar skulls which are a type of candy and bread with bone shapes on it.
What is the bread called and what is it used for? Pan de muerto and is used to remember and honour deceased loved ones.
What do the sugar skulls represent? The sweetness of life and the dead still being with us in spirit.
Why are bone patterns put into pan de muerto? To represent the bones of deceased family members.
What are tombs decorated with in cemeteries? Marigolds.
What do they do in the streets? Have parties.
Why do Mexicans believe all these things in the first place? They believe if they leave their offerings, the spirits of the Dead will come back to them to visit during these days.
