Chinese Philosophies

| 100 Schools of Thought | name for the time of many philosophers during the warring states |
| Confucianism | Goal is a fair and peaceful society. Respect your elders. People should be kind, honest, faithful, and wise. |
| Daoism | Follow the ways of nature. Accept whatever comes. Rulers should let the people make their own choices and rule as little as possible. |
| Legalism | Belief that people were bad by nature and needed to be controlled. People need harsh punishments and should not criticize the government. |
| Lord | Landowners who were loyal supporters of the king |
| Peasant | a person who does farm work for wealthy landowners |
| Filial Piety | Respecting and obeying your elders |
| Confucius | Founder of Confucianism |
| Analects | A book of the teachings of Confucius |
| Mandate of Heaven | A power or law believed to be granted by a god |
| Feudalism | A system of government based on landowners and tenants |
| Civil Servant | A person who works for a government |
| Yin | one half of the Daoist concept of opposing forces of nature; dark/shaded; the opposite of yang |
| Yang | one half of the Daoist concept of opposing forces of nature; light/sunlight; the opposite of yin |
| Laozi | Founder of Daoism |
| Dao De Jing | Written by many writers, includes teachings of Daoism. |
| Hanfeizi (person) | Founder of Legalism |
| Hanfeizi (book) | Book written on the ideas of Legalism |
| Warring States Period | time of warfare between regional lords following the decline of the Zhou dynasty |
