Viceroy Representative who ruled one of Spain's provinces in the Americas in the king's name
Encomienda a system in which Native Americans had to work for European colonists and accept their religion
Peninsulars a person born in spain or portugal and belonging to the highest social class of people in colonial latin america
Creoles A person with Spanish or Portuguese parents who was born in the Americas. Creoles were part of the middle class in colonial Latin America.
Mestizos a person of european america indian decent living in the spanish colonies
Mulattoes A person with both African and European background who lived in colonial Latin America.
Indians (Native Americans)
The Church The largest building in a Latin American town
Racism a feeling of being better than other people because of their race or color
White Man’s Burden the racist idea that Europeans "had" to "help" the "uncivilized Africans" with their notion of “superiority”
Dr. Livingstone a Scottish doctor and famous missionary who explored Africa, healing the sick and helping the poor
Horrible Effects of the Slave Trade 1. Harsh on Africans 2. Whole communities were destroyed 3. Families torn apart
Triangular Trade a system in which traders exchanged goods for slaves, sold the slaves for plantation products, and sold the products in Europe
Middle Passage the part in which enslaved people were shipped across the Atlantic from Africa to the Americas
Indentured Servants someone who agreed to work for a period of time (usually 7 years) in exchange for passage to the new world.
