5th Character Unit

TermDefinition
Theme - the message or life lesson the author is trying to have the reader learn
Historical Fiction -a made up story that takes place in the past or is centered around an event that happened in the past
Characterization -how the writer reveals what the character is like
Round Character -a character that changes throughout a story
Flat Character - a character that stays the same throughout a story
Character Traits - words that describe what the character is like
Physical Traits - details that show what the character looks like on the outside
Personality Traits - details that show what the character is like on the inside
Explicit Evidence - details directly stated in the text
Implicit Evidence - details that are implied in the text and must be inferred
Idiom - a phrase whose meaning is completely different than the literal meaning of the words in it
Point of View - who is narrating, or telling the story
Narrator - the person telling the story
Dialogue - when characters speak
Narration - when the narrator shares what's in their head
1st Person - the narrator is a character in the story (usually the main character)
2nd Person - the narrator is a person outside of the text (not a character in the text)
3rd Person - the narrator is a person outside of the story (not a character in the story)
