TermDefinition
Labor Unions Groups of workers who fought for better hours, wages, and working conditions
Collective Bargaining Labor discussions with management where unions represent workers.
Strikebreakers People who replaced workers that were on strike. Also referred to as "scabs."
Arbitration Settling a dispute by agreeing to accept the decision of a neutral outsider.
Populists Fought for reform within agriculture, government support, and a new form of currency (free silver).
Progressives Reformers who focused on urban problems, government, and business.
Muckrakers Journalists that expose problems in society in hopes that change will be made.
Pendleton Act Required a civil service exam for government jobs, to ensure people were qualified for the jobs they were offered.
Interstate Commerce Act Required railroads to publish reasonable rates, it helped cut down on railroad corruption
Pure Food and Drug Act Law passed to ensure food was properly labeled. Passed after Upton Sinclair's The Jungle.
Initiative Voters can propose a law/issue on a state ballot.
Referendum Voters can accept or reject a proposed law.
Recall Allowed voters to remove officials from office.
Direct Primary An election where a political party chooses its candidates for political office.
16th Amendment Created a graduated national income tax to bring in revenue for the government.
17th Amendment Allowed voters to directly elect state Senators instead of being appointed y party leaders.
18th Amendment Made it illegal to make, transport, or sell alcohol in the U.S. Also referred to as Prohibition.
19th Amendment Granted women the right to vote in the U.S. (women's suffrage)
Federal Reserve Act Law created to regulate the banking system. It created 12 regional banks supervised by the government.
