Microscope
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Base | The bottom of the microscope, used for support |
| Stage Clips | Found on the stage; hold the slides in place |
| Coarse Adjustment Knob | Large, round knob on the side of the microscope used for focusing the specimen; it moves the stage up and down |
| Nosepiece | Holds the objective lenses and can be rotated to change power |
| Stage | The flat platform where you place your slides |
| Arm | Supports the tube and connects it to the base |
| Body Tube | Connects the eyepiece to the objective lenses |
| Fine Adjustment Knob | Small, round knob on the side of the microscope used to fine-tune the focus of your specimen after using the coarse adjustment knob |
| Objectives | There are 3 of these lenses; one magnifies 4X, another one 10X, and the last one 40X |
| Eyepiece | The lens at the top that you look through |
| Light | Found near the base of the microscope; makes the specimen easier to see |
| Diaphragm | The rotating disk under the stage; different-sized holes change how bright and how large the light is on the slide |
| What is the total magnification when using the low power objective lens? | 10x eyepiece times 4x low power = 40x total magnification |
| What is the total magnification when using the medium power objective lens? | 10x eyepiece times 10x medium power = 100x total magnification |
| What is the total magnification when using the high power objective lens? | 10x eyepiece times 40x high power = 400x total magnification |
| Compound Light Microscope | uses 2 lenses to make an image look bigger |
| How many times does the eyepiece magnify? | magnifies 10 times |
| How many times does the low power lens magnify? | magnifies 4 times |
| How many times does the medium power lens magnify? | magnifies 10 times |
| How many times does the high power lens magnify? | magnifies 40 times |
