Conflict/Symbolism

conflict a struggle between opposing forces or characters.
2 types of conflict internal and external
internal conflict takes place inside a character’s mind or heart
external conflict takes place between a character and something outside the character
internal conflict example Example: a character is afraid of growing old
external conflict example Example: one character argues with another character
person vs. self • a struggle between a character and his feelings, conscience, or fear • takes place on the inside
person vs. person • a struggle, mental or physical, between two characters • the other character is sometimes the antagonist
person vs. nature • a struggle between a character and mother nature • mother nature = weather, animals, insects, sickness, illnesses
person vs. society • a struggle between a character and the laws or beliefs of a group • could involve poverty, politics, social norms, expectations, or values
symbol something that stands for or represents something else
symbolism using symbols to represent ideas
to stand for important ideas in a text Why do authors use symbols?
